Purpose

Mercury (Hg), a chemical element with atomic number 80, is a hazardous substance that can pose significant risks to human health and the environment if handled, stored, or disposed of improperly. Exposure to mercury can cause serious health effects, while uncontrolled releases may contaminate air, soil, and water. This training course highlights the hazards associated with mercury and emphasizes the importance of following established safety procedures, using appropriate protective measures, and complying with applicable regulations when working with or handling mercury-containing materials.

Objectives

Participants will gain an understanding of the health and environmental risks associated with mercury exposure and learn how to handle mercury safely. The course covers hazard identification, exposure prevention, the selection and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling and storage practices, and appropriate procedures for responding to mercury spills or accidental exposure. Participants will also learn about immediate response measures and the importance of seeking professional medical assistance in suspected poisoning cases, as well as the safe collection, handling, storage, and disposal of mercury waste in accordance with applicable regulations. Particular emphasis is placed on preventing exposure, minimizing environmental contamination, and maintaining a safe working environment.
