Purpose

The main purpose of this course is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of offshore vessels’ propulsion systems and their operating principles. Familiarity with the vessel’s specific propulsion system is essential for maintaining the safety of the crew, the vessel, and offshore assets. Operators who lack adequate knowledge of the propulsion system and its manoeuvring characteristics are at greater risk of causing accidents or incidents that may endanger personnel and property.

Objectives

Participants will develop a fundamental understanding of propulsion systems used in the offshore maritime industry and learn how to operate them correctly and efficiently. The course covers the main components of different propulsion systems, their control inputs, and the generation of thrust and manoeuvring forces. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding how control commands affect vessel movement and handling, supporting safe, controlled, and efficient vessel operations.
