Purpose
Shipping companies are required to establish and implement a Safety Management System (SMS) that complies with applicable international maritime safety regulations. An effective SMS aims to promote a strong safety culture, identify and control operational hazards, prevent accidents and pollution, and support safe and efficient operations. This course explains what an SMS is, its purpose and scope, and how its requirements can be applied in daily activities both on board vessels and within shore-based offices. Failure to follow established SMS procedures or implement them effectively can compromise safety, increase the risk of incidents, and negatively affect operational performance.

Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will gain a general understanding of the key elements and requirements of an SMS and how to apply them in their everyday work. Topics include safety responsibilities, risk awareness, compliance with procedures, hazard identification, incident prevention, and the reporting and investigation of accidents and near misses. Participants will also learn the importance of consistently implementing company safety policies and procedures to maintain high safety standards and support continuous improvement. Particular emphasis is placed on individual accountability, operational efficiency, and ensuring that safety remains a priority in every activity.
